Style
Steve McCurry is most known for his war photos, specifically his portrait photos of war victims. His photos are usually vibrant, colorful, and dramatic. They invoke emotion in the viewer and tell the story of the people who live in the war zone instead of the people who are fighting there. His photos are very detailed and have a clear subject.
Philosophy
McCurry became famous during the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan in 1980. He photographed many refugees in Afghanistan and showed the story of the common people instead of the soldiers like many other war photographers at the time. To be able to photograph the war victims he dressed in Afghan clothing and smuggled rolls of film into the country by sewing it into the threads of his coat (1). It is evident that McCurry is profoundly dedicated to his work and risked his life to document the effects of the war.
Influences
Steve McCurry was a big inspiration for me because his photos are extraordinarily colorful, detailed, and vibrant. The photographs that he took gave me an example to look at so that I could make my images look equally colorful and detailed. I also like how his photos make a difference in the world. None of my photos have made a difference in the world yet but I hope maybe they will someday.
